Our first students were our family

Our first students were our family

Our objective is to make your learning experience just as adventurous and fun as we have for our own family and friends.

In 2008, four of my grandsons were old enough for my son, Gabriel, and I to teach them an outdoor lesson in fire starting. The boys spent the morning on a scavenger hunt finding the bark, 2 sticks, a piece of string, and a good rock with a hole in it. We then had a whittling class (yes mothers we had them wear gloves and chaps) to shape the fire starter stick.

Ezekiel aka ‘Zeke’ is only four when he learned to spin the stick by hand and heat up the spot on the bark until it was hot enough to ignite the kindling.

Zeke was only four when he learned how to do this. Rhetorically I must ask, “Are you smarter than a four year old”?

The boys had spent the afternoon, the day before, learning gun safety and how to shoot a 22 rifle. The day of the fire starting lesson, we had them shoot their hotdogs that had been hanging on strings between two trees with a pellet gun. Having harvested their lunch, they piled up sticks for a fire. Hand started the fire and enjoyed cooking their lunch.

My wife, Mary, is a culinary chef. Being in a survival situation does NOT mean eating tree bark, wild plants and nuts. How does grilled chicken with mango salsa, rice pilaf and asparagus sound?
